The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee has had a Center located in downtown Milwaukee since itfirst opened its doors in Milwaukee more than 150 years ago. Today, the Downtown YMCA, which opened in 1998, is located in the historic John Plankinton Building (which also houses the Shops of the Grand Avenue). The Y offers an incredible variety of group exercise classes and programs to challenge and motivate members and guests to stay on course with their fitness goals. Along with showcasing one of the largest indoor running tracks in southeast Wisconsin and state-of-the-art health and fitness equipment, the Y staff and volunteers make it their goal to work with members and guests to define their goals and get them started on the path to achieving real, sustainable results.
The Downtown YMCA Center is not just about adult fitness either. Each weekday, the Y’s after-school mentoring program Sponsor-A-Scholar links academically promising MPS high school students from low-income families with caring adult mentors to help make these students’ dreams of a college education come true.
Along with our other (eight across metro Milwaukee) Y Center location teams, the Downtown Y staff and volunteers work to provide the programming and services needed to help address the significant needs of families and individuals within the central city. A nonprofit like no other, the Y is focused on strengthening the foundations of the community by putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
